0655. The Intensity of His Approval of Bible Study
The Intensity of His Approval of Bible Study
"Martha, Martha, thou art cambered about many things, but * * Mary hath chosen the better part that cannot be taken from her" (Luk_10:41-42).
Christ, the guest in the home of Martha and of Mary. Martha, cumbered with serving, and Mary who had served, in part, but who also sat at Jesus’ feet, is hearing His words. Martha complains and says, "Mary hath left me to serve alone." Christ is intense in Mary’s behalf, and He says, "Martha, Martha, * * Mary hath chosen the better part" (Luk_10:41).
And what is the better part? It is to sit at His feet and hear His words.
Christ will always have intense approval for those who love His Word and ponder its pages. His command is: "Search the Scriptures." Paul wrote: "Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly." Too many of us give more time to reading the daily papers and current literature than is meet. We should allow nothing to hinder our study of the Scriptures. Note some things which the Scriptures impart.
1. The Word of God gives salvation: "And receive with meekness the engrafted Word, which is able to save the soul."
2. The Word of God discerns or judges the thoughts and reasonings of the heart: "For the Word of God is living and powerful * * and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
3. The Word of God shines light upon our pathway, "For Thy Word is a lamp to my feet and a light unto my pathway."
4. The Word of God purifies the life. "Sanctify them through Thy Truth, Thy Word is Truth."
5. The Word of God is powerful: "Is not My Word as a fire saith the Lord, and as a hammer that breaketh a rock in pieces?"
6. The Word of God is fruitful, "So shall My Word be that goeth forth out of My mouth. It shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please."
Illustration: It is said that when Sir Walter Scott was dying, he asked his son to bring him the Book. His son said, "Which book, father?" Sir Walter answered, "There is but one Book, my son, bring me "the Book." Let us all make the Bible the one Book of our lives.
