David’s Life Sought

"Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me" (Psa_3:1).

The key verse seems to sum up many of the troubles that befell David. Unto David God said:

"I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels * * and thine house and thy kingdom shall be established forever before thee" (2Sa_7:12-16).

Thus it was that God, Who had so carefully kept vigil over His own, and had guarded them through fire and flood and famine, during the days in Egypt, and during the days of the judges which followed, now reveals His immutable will.

Certainly satan saw His handwriting on the wall. He knew that in David the Psalter Shepherd, lay the coming Seed of the woman Who was to bruise his head.

1. What meant that javelin in the hand of Saul so quickly thrust to slay the shepherd lad? The Bible says: "An evil spirit from the Lord" fell hard on Saul. And God suffered the wrath of satan to praise Him in His rescue of this lad of destiny.

2. And why those years with David fleeing from the wrath of Saul? In many a mountain fastness, in some lonely cave, or in some foreign land satan often sought to overtake and slay the man upon whom God had set the coming of the Seed. Let no one think that David carried with him what men call a "charmed life." David was hidden in the hand of God. He could not die, for had he died the purposes of God would have died in him.

3. When Absalom rebelled and satan thought that David’s end had come, poor David fled and as he fled he prayed: "Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! Many are they that rise up against me!" (Psa_3:1). But David need have had no fear; he was hedged about of God. Hear then his prayer as he placed his trust in God: "I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that set themselves against me round about. Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God. * * Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: Thy blessing is upon Thy people!" (Psa_3:6-8).

And satan saw God lead His servant on, through many a narrow pass, until God gathered him unto his fathers!
