0733. Satan's Strategies Against the Son of God
Satan’s Strategies Against the Son of God
It may be well to very briefly review the general purport of the previous study. This having been done, note the transcendent glory of the birth of Christ:
1. The Birth of Christ Announced by Gabriel. The centuries sped on their way. Four thousand years had passed since first our God had said concerning the Seed of the woman, "It shall bruise thy head;" and yet the Seed had thus far never come.
And then, one happy day, a Heavenly visitor came from God, came to the Virgin Mary (blessed among women was she) and thus the angel spake "Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call His name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest" (Luk_1:31-32).
How marvelous was all of this. In this gracious visit, Gabriel announced the human lineage of a son to be miraculously conceived of the Holy Ghost; and then in fulfillment of the Davidic pledge, he added these significant words: "And the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David: and He shall reign over the House of Jacob forever; and of His Kingdom there shall be no end" (Luk_1:32-33).
2. God’s Faithfulness to His Promise. None need doubt that God kept His Edenic pledge, which later had been restricted to the Abrahamic and Davidic lines. The genealogy from Abraham to Christ, through Joseph, the husband of Mary, and the legal father of our Lord, is fully established, being given in detail in the 1st chapter of Matthew. The Holy Spirit calls this genealogy "The Book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham" (Mat_1:1). This genealogical table discovers fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David unto Jechonias, and fourteen from Jechonias unto Christ.
The genealogy from Jesus Christ back to Adam is given in Luke. This genealogy carries the lineage of Christ back, from Mary through her father Heli (father-in-law to Joseph), by way of Nathan unto David; and then, step by step, the record passes on back past Abraham and Noah unto Adam. Luke establishes Christ’s heirship to the Davidic throne through Mary, and then goes back of Matthew’s line and authenticates Christ as Adam’s Son.
