717. Satan’s Many Parts
Some years ago, at the Playgoers’ Club, a Mr. Osman Edwards delivered an address on “Stage Fiends.” In his dramatic career, said Mr. Edwards, as the devil he had played many parts—a Hebrew valet, an Indian sage, a Catholic monster, a Protestant buffoon, an Elizabethan mischief-maker, a Dutch politician, a Spanish professor, a German sceptic, a Shelleian saint, and a Corellian contradiction.
The Bible shows that Satan can play many parts, and among the principal parts he plays are the following seven:
1. He is the Devil to deceive—Rev_20:10.
2. He is the adversary (Satan) to accuse—Luk_22:31.
3. He is an angel of light to misrepresent—2Co_11:14.
4. He is an enemy to oppose—Mat_13:28, Mat_13:39.
5. He is the hinderer to deter—1Th_2:18.
6. He is the god of this age to blind—2Co_4:4.
7. He is the tempter to allure—Luk_4:2; 1Th_3:5.
