The Storm at Sea

"There arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the wares: But He was asleep" (Mat_8:24).

1. Our key verse describes a wonderful scene. Upon the quiet waves of Galilee rode a small boat–a boat made historic, because, within its rugged hull lay the Lord Jesus fast asleep. The wearied Son was taking needed rest. The ever watchful satan saw Him so. No one dared match Him when awake, but how helpless seemed the Son asleep.

The winds were awakened from their lethargy; and half startled by the sudden shock, they, by some unseen force, were whipped into a maddened fury as they broke against the little helpless boat.

Ah, who can help thee now? Thou frail craft, thy day has come! Thy rugged rowers have breasted many a stormy sea, but none so rough as this. E’en Peter, bravest of the brave, was full afraid. He rushed toward the sleeping Christ. "Epistata"–"Master,"–he cried, "carest Thou not that we perish?" (Mar_4:38).

Quiet and undisturbed the Son of God stood forth. "Oh ye of little faith," said He, "wherefore didst thou doubt?" The ship that bears the Son of God cannot sink. Though satan brings ten thousand storms against its weakened hull, it still will ride the waves secure, until the Master of the elements permits the boat to fail. Thus rising, quiet and unafraid, the Son of God, the Lord of all the seas, rebuked the waves: "Be still!" Then suddenly there was a great calm, while he the strategist, who stirred the storm, sank back into the lair of his defeat.
