0799. At His Feet to Learn
At His Feet to Learn
"And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard His Word" (Luk_10:39).
Martha was cumbered with much serving.
Mary served, but she also sat at His feet. She sat a learner.
To my mind one of the beautiful scenes of the Bible is that described in Matthew 5, where our Lord sat upon the mountain side with His disciples gathered around about His feet. There it was that He opened His mouth and taught them. The words which fell from His lips are recorded in chapters 5, 6 and 7. Every word is worth its weight in gold.
The scene upon the mountain is not the only one in which our Lord taught His disciples or taught the multitudes. We would need to review the Gospels themselves, if we began to appreciate the blessed messages which they who sat at the feet of the Master heard.
Our Lord as Teacher, discoursed about His coming into the world; He outlined how He was the fulfillment of wonderful Old Testament types; He magnified His undying love for man, His Cross, His return to the Father and His coming back to reign.
How beautiful it is that while we can not literally sit at His feet, as many sat in the days of yore, yet we may, if we will, sit at His feet, as the blessed Holy Spirit takes of the things of Christ and reveals them unto us.
Of one thing we may be sure, it is not in sitting at the feet of worldly wisdom, that we learn the will of God. They who sit at the feet of the risen and exalted Christ, are they who know His Word, and who are prepared to follow Him.
"At the feet of Jesus,
Listening to His Word:
Learning wisdom's lesson
From her loving Lord:
Mary, led by Heavenly grace,
Chose the meek disciple's place.
"At the feet of Jesus is the place for me,
There a humble learner would I choose to be."
