Full Salvation Set Forth. (2) Salvation From Sin's Dominion
"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?" (Rom_6:1).
Jesus Christ died to save us from sin's penalty, and He lives to save us from sin's power.
We are not saved from the future penalty of sin, and then left dupes and slaves to sin's present sway.
There are three great powers which will ever seek to entangle us and to overwhelm us in sin's meshes. Over each of these we have in Christ, the way of victory.
1. There is the devil. He does not easily let us go. He will hound our footsteps unto the last. He will follow hot on the trail of our daily walk. He will seek to hinder us here and to entangle us there.
The devil is not chained: he is a roaring lion going about and seeking whom he may devour. He is ready with every cunning art to entice us into sin.
2. There is the world. The world is running its course across every purpose of God. We are taught to "love not the world neither the things that are in the world." The world and its allurements, ever call us from the lonely path of our separation. The world is that spirit which follows the popular trend of the day. It tempts us with the lust of the eyes; it calls us away from God.
3. There is the flesh. The flesh is the "ego," the self life, the old man. The flesh is that within me, which would draw me away from God. The flesh is corrupt according to deceitful lusts. The flesh seeks to overwhelm us, and to cause us to succumb to its powers.
Salvation includes deliverance from this threefold power of sin. We are made more than conquerors in Christ.
However, we need to recognize that it is Christ risen and exalted Who gives the victory.
When Christ ascended up on high, He ascended above principalities and powers and made us to sit with Him in the place of victory. When Christ ascended up on high, He sent forth the Spirit. And if we walk in the Spirit we shall not fulfil the works of the flesh. He now clothes us with an invincible armor, and He places into our hand the Sword of the Spirit, a sword far more powerful than the sword of King Arthur.
Christ has ascended up on high, and it is a faith in Him, risen and seated, which saves us from the power of sin.
