The Meaning of the Cross

The Cross and the Father (Rom_8:32).

The Cross and Christ (Php_2:7-11).

The Cross and the World (1Jn_2:2).

The Cross and the Christ Objective (Heb_12:2).

The Cross and Redemption (Eph_1:7).

The Cross and Victory (Rev_12:11).

The Cross and Its Rejecters (Heb_10:29).

We are constrained to stress the need of plain and positive preaching on the Cross. There are many who deny the efficacy of the Cross; there are many others who underestimate its value. It is a threadworn saying that the Blood of Christ is weaved through all the fabric of Scripture as a scarlet cord; nevertheless it is a true one.

The Cross is the basis of every blessing given us in Christ Jesus. To be sure when the foundation of a building is securely laid, we must needs go on to the superstructure. The superstructure may be far more imposing than the foundation, yet we must remember that the foundation carries the burden of the whole building, and makes the building possible.

The far-reaching effects of Calvary touch the uttermost circumference of eternity. The story of the Cross of Christ is not alone the song of the redeemed of earth; it is also the song of Heaven. Those who enter the New Jerusalem will never forget that their entrance was by the Blood of the Lamb.

Let us, then, reverently and prayerfully study some of the deeper meanings of the Cross, and as we study let us ask God the Holy Spirit to reveal unto us His truth.
