Faith's Far-Flung Vision

It is generally conceded that the province of faith is to look back to the Cross; that faith has to do almost exclusively with salvation and justification.

Hebrews 11 gives us quite another view. The leader should read God's definition of faith as set forth in Heb_11:1. This verse and its statement will be found to be the pivot round which the whole chapter is builded. The instances sighted all look forward to things to come, and all demonstrate the abiding and unshaken confidence of the saints whose names are recorded in those things.

It is this kind of faith that believes that God is, and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him. It is this kind of faith alone that pleases God.

The men who cut from their Bible the statements of "coming things," cut themselves from the approval of God. We must believe what the Lord has spoken through the prophets; we must believe what God has promised for those who love Him, or else we are under the displeasure of God.

The saints of today have a revelation of things to come, far fuller than that vouchsafed to Old Testament saints; therefore we should possess a far wider sweep in the confidence and the conviction of our faith. May we not be fools and slow of heart to believe all that God has spoken.

Faith looks afar and substance gives

To things hoped for; it always lives

With strong convictions; firmly clings;

Gives evidence to unseen things.
