1004. What Isaiah Says of Christ As King
What Isaiah Says of Christ As King
"For onto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace" (Isa_9:6)
The first of the major Prophets, is Isaiah. We will look at chapter 9 Luk_1:6-7 : "For unto us a Child is born, and unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder * * upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever." Then for the doubter and the quibbler follows an expression well worth your notice, "The zeal of the Lord of Hosts shall perform this." There is no use to seek to spiritualize these words because–
1. The throne of David is not the Father's throne. Christ Jesus is now seated on His Father's throne in the Heavens. He says, "To him that overcometh will I grant to sit down with Me on My throne even as I also overcame and am set down with My Father upon His throne."
2. David's throne was not in the hearts of his people, but in the city of Jerusalem, and Jesus is to sit, not in the hearts of saints, but on the Davidic throne in Jerusalem.
One other passing reference from Isa_11:1-10. "A Branch shall grow out of his (Jesse, father of David) roots." Then follows the gracious leadership of this Branch. During His day, the earth is to be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. The passage concludes, "And he shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and His rest shall be glorious." Praise God! When Jesus reigns "righteousness shall be the girdle of His loins and faithfulness the girdle of His reins."
