1120. The Iron Did Swim

1120. The Iron Did Swim

The Iron Did Swim

"And he cat down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim" (2Ki_6:6).

It is just here that many want to part with the story of the Lost Axe Head. What a shame! Some want to take away the miraculous from the Word of God. They will follow God along seemingly natural lines, but when He does a deed that is contrary to nature; a deed wherein He shows Himself the God of nature, and the God of the miraculous, they immediately demur.

Why seek to explain away the mighty workings of a mighty God? We know well enough that Elisha had no power within himself to make an iron axe head to swim; we know also that the three Hebrew children could not charm the fire in the furnace, wherein they were cast; we know that Joshua could not make the sun stand still–we know, however, that, with God, all things are possible.

The leopard cannot change his spots, nor the Ethiopian his skin; but God can change them. "Whether is it easier [for Christ] to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or, to say, Arise, take up thy bed, and walk?" Whether is easier for God, to make an axe head swim, or to restore a backslider to his wonted place of power and of service?

The iron did swim.

The sinner was saved.

The backslider was forgiven and restored.

All are miraculous, all are of God, all are possible.

The iron did swim.

Christ came forth from the grave, "He is risen indeed."

Christ ascended in a cloud and was seated at the right hand of power.

All are miraculous, all are of God, all are possible.
