The Offense of the Cross

Gal_5:1-15

The Cross of Jesus Christ stands as the foundation of the faith once for all delivered. The Cross has always been and always will be the believer's offense.

To the Gentile the Cross is "foolishness," and to the Jew the Cross is a stumblingblock."

Over the smitten rock the people fall. There remains to this day no objection to magnifying the life of Christ. No one objects to parading Christ as the world's greatest man. There is no offense in proclaiming what is commonly noted as "the ethics of Christ." It is the Cross that gives offense.

Christian people would do well to weigh their work which they undertake and every word which they hear, in their relationship to the atonement of Christ. If it is a ministration or message which leaves out the Cross, or, which at the best brings in the Cross as a mere ornamentation, suggestive of sacrifice; the believer had better stand aloof. We have no right to participate in any kind of message or ministry which denies the need of the substitutionary and atoning work of the Cross of Jesus Christ. A call long and loud should go forth–"Back to the Cross!"
