The Names of the Saints

It will be well worth our while to study seven distinctive names which the Holy Spirit uses in referring to saints.

We all enjoy the study of the Jehovah titles, because each title expresses a distinct description of our Lord Jesus Christ in His dealings with men in general, and with saints.

The titles of believers are also very suggestive. Each name suggests a distinct description of saints in their relationship to the Lord Jesus Christ.

The reader will notice that we have tried to arrange the seven names in a way to show progression in the life of the saved.

First of all saints should become learners, sitting at the feet of the Lord Jesus and hearing His words. Next, they should be servants doing His will. Then, they are put in charge of larger affairs as stewards. After stewardship we note that believers are apostles, sent out on service for their Lord. Next, they are friends, secret holders, having the closest companionship with their Lord. As deacons, they are ministers, following the Lord fully. Finally saints are brethren, having fellowship not only with Christ, but with one another.

Not all Christians fulfil in their daily experiences the name, with which they are Divinely called. Our chief ambition should be to lay hold on everything for which Christ hath laid hold on us.
