1276. Disciples–Learners
Disciples–Learners
"And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding His twelve disciples, He departed thence, to teach and to preach in their cities" (Mat_11:1).
Mary was a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, in the truest sense of that word. Her choicest place was sitting at the feet of Jesus and hearing His word. A disciple is a learner. He does not claim to have reached the highest altitude of Divine knowledge, but he does study to show himself approved of God, by searching the Scriptures and by rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
When we are saved we are first babes, and we have need to eat of the sincere milk of the Word, until we are able to eat the strong meat of the Word. Disciples are destined to become no longer babes, but strong men in Christ Jesus.
Job said, "I have esteemed the Words of His mouth more than my necessary food."
Christ said, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
Paul said, "And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the Word of His grace, which is able to build you up."
Peter said, "Desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby."
A disciple is not necessarily one who has reached maturity in service. A disciple in one who follows Christ, and sits at the Master's feet, hearing His Word.
Boys and girls going to school are disciples; they have a long period of years which they must spend in training. When they desire to cease learning and get out into active service, they are not wise.
Christians who are in the school of Christ, should desire to press through to the end. Of course, "graduation," with Christian disciples, does not really occur until we know as we are known. Even after our service begins our training continues. There is always more to learn. Woe unto that Christian who ceases to be a disciple.
One of the beautiful pictures of the Bible is in Mat_5:1-2 : "And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain: and when He was set, His disciples came unto Him; and He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying." What a delightful picture! The highest of schools did not require the classic halls of the modern university. It did require a Teacher Who spake as never man spake; it did require disciples to sit at His feet on the grass.
It is unto disciples that God reveals His truths. On one occasion the twelve learners, came and said unto Christ; "Why speakest Thou in parables?" He answered and said unto them, "Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but to them it is not given."
May we have an earnest desire to be disciples of Jesus Christ.
