1303. Me and Thee

1303. Me and Thee

Me and Thee

"Thou shalt abide for Me * * so will I also be for thee" (Hos_3:3).

The Book tells us it is not good for man to dwell alone; therefore, God made him a helpmeet. But there is another sense in which it is not good for man to dwell alone. We need the Lord Jesus Christ.

The little conjunction "and" links together the "Me" and the "thee" of our text. What a blessed union.

One of the great notes of Ephesians is the word "together." We are "quickened together," "raised together," "seated together."

An aged minister, after forty years of service, had felt compelled to retire from active work. He resigned his pulpit on one Sunday, severing the relationship that had bound pastor and people together for nearly half a century. The next day the sexton saw him pacing up and down upon the platform before the empty pews. He seemed to be mourning over the broken ties, and then, with his voice filled with emotion, the sexton heard him say:

"But one thing I know

We two are so joined,

He can't be in Heaven

And leave me behind."

The Lord Jesus tells us that He will come in and sup with us, and that we may sup with Him. Our fellowship indeed is with the Father and with the Lord Jesus Christ.

"For I tell you I have seen Him,

God's beloved Son;

From His lips have learned the mystery,

He and His are one.

There, as knit into the body,

Living joint and limb,

We, His ransomed, His beloved,

We are one with Him."

Hos_3:3, presents the longing of the heart of our God toward His people Israel. He said unto Israel: "Thou shalt abide for Me many days; thou shall not play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee."

The Lord Jesus has this same longing for the saints. He wants us to be perfectly united in the bonds of Heavenly love. He says unto us: "Abide in Me, and I in you." He wants us to be perfectly joined, to be one with Him, even as He and the Father are one.

"I have a Friend so precious,

So very dear to me;

He loves me with such tender love,

He loves so faithfully;

I could not live apart from Him.

I could not if I'd try;

And so we dwell together,

My Lord and I."

Let us have nothing apart from Him, nothing unshared with Him, nothing hid from Him.

When we were married, we asked our betrothed what words she would have engraved in our wedding ring. The words she chose were these: "Each for the other, and both for God."

Would not this make a good motto for us all, with which to seal our attachment for the Lord Jesus Christ?
