He Bears Us On His Shoulders

"And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing" (Luk_15:5).

Our Lord Jesus spoke many beautiful parables, but none has been more read or more appreciated than the threefold parable of Luke 15, The Lost Sheep, The Lost Coin, and The Lost Son, the Prodigal. We call attention to Luk_15:5 of this parable, where the shepherd has found his sheep far from the fold, and, with joy, has placed it upon his shoulder and is bringing it home. The shoulder is the place of strength. It was there that the high priest wore the names of the tribes upon his epaulet. The Lord Jesus Christ not only has us in His heart, but He bears us on His shoulders. He not only has us under His wings, but He bears us abroad upon His wings. The Lord's portion is His people. Jacob is the lot of His inheritance. He found him, He lead him about, He instructed him, He kept him. As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings; so the Lord alone did lead him. In the Lord, our God, "there is everlasting strength."

1. Jesus Christ is our Samson. Samson was the strong man. None could bind him. He could take the gates of the city upon his shoulders and bear them away. He could lean heavily upon the pillars of the temple and bring them down. Jesus Christ can bear our burdens, if we will only cast them upon Him. He is strong and mighty. He can overthrow every obstacle which may confront us. In Him is everlasting strength.

2. Jesus Christ is our David. David went forth to meet the giant. He overthrew him, he cut off his head with the sword, and routed the enemy. Our David will meet our enemy for us and overthrow him, and bear us victoriously through every conflict. He will make us conquerors. He once met satan and vanquished him, and He will lead us in the train of His triumph.

3. Jesus Christ is our Jonathan. Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, "Come, let us go over against the host of these uncircumcised." Jonathan knew that it was nothing with the Lord to save, whether by the many or by few, and he and his armor-bearer wrought a great victory. They overthrew the host of the Philistines. Our Lord is our Jonathan. He will cast down the enemy. He will lay them low. He will lead us to the place of victory. Satan and all his hosts will flee before our Lord. In God we have a Saviour Who is mighty. He will bear us on His shoulders, the place of His strength. He will carry us through.
