1319. He Guides Us with His Eye
He Guides Us with His Eye
"I will instruct thee, and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with Mine eye" (Psa_32:8).
In discussing God's care for His own, we have seen that He has us in His heart, that He bears us on His shoulders, that He helps us with His hand, that He girds us with His arms, and now He guides us with His eye.
1. We have a God Who is in Heaven above. "The Lord, He is God in Heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else" (Deu_4:39). When the two spies came back from Jericho and gave report of how the terror of the Lord had fallen upon the land, Joshua said, "The Lord your God, He is God in Heaven above and in earth beneath." By these words the people were encouraged to go up against Jericho. David realized that he had a God Who looked down upon him from on high, and he said, "Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty. * * In Thine hand is power and might, and in Thine hand it is to make great and to give strength." It is a blessing to the believer when he realizes that Jesus Christ is exalted and very high; that Jesus Christ has taken a seat at the Father's right hand "far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named" (see Eph_1:19-23).
A young lady, who refused to go with some young people into a school dance, was scoffed at and sneered upon by the other girls. When she went home, she said, "Mamma, everybody looked down upon me." Then her father said, "There was another one, also, daughter, Who looked down upon you, but He looked down because He was so far above you and He looked down with approval. He will vindicate your fidelity to Him and richly reward your faithfulness."
2. "The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward Him." The eyes of the Lord are upon those who love Him and serve Him, and He will certainly do them good. When Peter cursed and swore, the Lord turned and looked upon him, but that was the look of compassionate reproval. We want the look of commendation and the look of courage for the conflict. "Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear Him, * * to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine" (Psa_33:18-19). "The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, * * but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil" (Psa_34:15-16).
3. When the children of Israel journeyed through the wilderness, the God Who is in Heaven above, looked down upon His children and guided them with a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. We will give a few of the passages which so beautifully portray this Divine leadership and which are applicable to those of us who walk faithfully with the Lord.
Exo_13:21 : "And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them in the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light."
Psa_68:7-8 : "O God, when Thou wentest forth before Thy people, when Thou didst march through the wilderness; the earth shook, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God."
Num_10:33-34 : "And they departed from the mount of the Lord * * and the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord went before them * * and the cloud of the Lord was upon them."
4. When the Lord, our God, goes before and guides with His eye, it spells victory to those who follow Him.
Deu_1:30 : "The Lord your God which goeth before you, He shall fight for you, according to all that He did for you in Egypt before your eyes."
Deu_31:3 : "The Lord thy God, He will go over before thee, and He will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them."
Joh_8:12 : "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."
Surely every one of us will console our hearts with the thought that we are not walking through the wilderness of this world, with its terrors and its temptations, alone. Our Lord has said, "My sheep hear My voice, and they follow Me." Our Lord "calleth His own sheep by name, and leadeth them out, and when He putteth forth His own sheep, He goeth before them, and the sheep follow Him; for they know His voice."
"Anywhere with Jesus, I can safely go,
Anywhere He leads me in this world below.
Anywhere without Him dearest joys would fade;
Anywhere with Jesus, I am not afraid."
