1320. He Backs Us with His Power
He Backs Us with His Power
"And Jesus came, and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in Heaven and in earth.
"Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost" (Mat_28:18-19).
1. We are called upon to continue the work which Christ began. It is thus that we read in the Book of Acts, "The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which He was taken up." Our Lord Jesus began the work. He has left us to complete it. We are here in Christ's stead, as ambassadors.
2. Our work shall be greater than the work of our Lord. "And greater works than these shall he do, because I go unto My Father" (Joh_14:12). When our Lord was upon the earth, He wrought many miracles and wonders and signs. Christ still works, and He works through His children, by the Holy Spirit. He works more mightily through us than He Himself wrought. While upon earth Christ was circumscribed to one locality, so far as His service was concerned. To-day the risen and exalted Christ is working the wonderful works of God in every land and through multitudes of believers.
3. God gives to every one a definite phase of service. "And to every one his work" (Mar_13:34). We are "created in Christ Jesus unto good works." These works God has afore prepared for them that love Him (see Eph_2:10). We read, "There was a man sent from God, whose name was John." Every believer should be able to put his name where John's name was written, for we are all sent of God to do a definite and specific work.
4. God promises to empower us in His service. Following our key verse we read, "Lo, I am with you," but we also read, "All authority and power is given unto Me." Thus our Lord is backing us in our service with all His power. In Act_1:8, we read, "Ye shall receive power, the Holy Ghost coming upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me." Thus it is that our God cares for us, not only in our daily needs, not only in our struggles and conflicts, but also in our service, in the fulfillment of our task. He does not ask us to go alone, but He goes with us, even as the Apostle Paul said, "There stood by me this night the Angel of the Lord, Whose I am and Whom I serve."
