1339. The Incapabilities of Worldly Wisdom
The Incapabilities of Worldly Wisdom
"Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought" (1Co_2:6).
The Holy Ghost through the Apostle Paul does not discredit the value of human knowledge, nor the worth of worldly wisdom. What the Holy Spirit does do, is to show that the wisdom of this world cannot receive the things which are of God–the spiritual things.
When the eunuch sat in his chariot reading the Prophet Esaias, he understood not what he read, therefore, he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
"The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1Co_2:14).
The scholarship of this world crucified the Lord of Glory.
When Paul visited the Corinthian Church, he came unto them, not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring the testimony of God. He did speak wisdom, but not man's wisdom.
The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. God does not choose many wise men after the flesh because the world by wisdom knew not God. God says: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent" (1Co_1:19).
The prince of Tyrus was wiser than Daniel. With his wisdom and with his understanding he had gotten riches, and gold, and silver into his treasury. By his great wisdom he had increased his riches. Yet, in all of this, his heart was lifted up and he said, "I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas" (Eze_28:2-5).
Worldly wisdom is the world's choicest gift, the highest reach attained by men. Still, a man by wisdom cannot find out God. The "foolishness" of God is greater than the wisdom of men. The wise man must come before God with the spirit of a little child, that he may be taught of the Holy Spirit.
The scholarship of this world has no eye to see, no ear to hear, and no heart into which can enter the things which God hath prepared for them who love Him. These things must be understood through the Spirit of God. "For the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God."
Spiritual things must be spiritually discerned.
The man of the world, the possessor of profoundest wisdom, has no right to enter into the realm of the things of God, until he has known the Spirit of God.
