The Sword of the Spirit

"And take the helmet of salvation, and the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God" (Eph_6:17).

The Book of Ephesians closes with a wonderful picture of the believer's conflict. It is not a conflict against flesh and blood, "but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked."

In order to meet this enemy we are given an armor that covers every part of the body (excepting the back) for we are not expected to turn and run. Our armor, however, is not alone for resistance. We are to stand, but are also to withstand. Ours is an aggressive warfare. Thus, we are clad with an invincible armor, and in addition we are given one weapon for fighting. There is but one weapon needed and but one is given, and that is the only weapon for aggressive warfare–it is the Sword of the Spirit.
