1359. A Fountain of Waters
A Fountain of Waters
"Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give Me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of Him, and He would have given thee Living Water" (Joh_4:10).
Jesus Christ is the Fountain of Water. He said, "Come unto Me, and drink" (Joh_7:37).
1. An all-inclusive claim. When the Lord Jesus Christ saw the thirsty souls about Him, and bade them drink of Him, and be satisfied, He at once set Himself forth as the source of all blessedness; as the supplement of every need. He did not refer the children of Israel to another; He called them to Himself.
When John the Baptist was preaching he said, "I am 'the voice of one crying * * Prepare ye the way of the Lord,'" but John never asked the people to drink of him.
When the people ran to Peter and would have done him obeisance, Peter immediately said: "Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?" (Act_3:12). Then Peter ascribed all the glory unto Christ. He said it was through faith in His name that the man stood there whole before them all.
When the people rushed out unto Paul, and would have given him Divine worship, immediately Paul and Barnabas rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, and saying, "Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the Living God" (Act_14:14-15).
In all the Word of God, beginning in Genesis, and running through Revelation, there is never a prophet, a priest or a king; there is never an apostle, a pastor, or an evangelist, who claimed Divine prerogatives; none ever dared to say: "Come unto Me, and drink."
2. Jesus, the Son of God. He Who said, "Come unto Me, and drink," also said, "I am the Resurrection and the Life;" "I am the Door;" "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life;" "I am the Light of the world;" "I am the Bread of Life."
Jesus Christ could never have said these words unless He was very God, of very God.
The joy of it all is that every claim of the Master has been verified.
"I came to Jesus as I was,
Weary and worn and sad;
I found in Him a resting place,
And He has made me glad."
There are ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands upon thousands who can bear witness to the fact of the all-sufficiency of Christ. They have proved Him to be everything He claimed to be.
