We are to discuss the Ten Commandments, The danger will lie in the fact that some will immediately imagine that they are under the Law; that condemnation comes from breaking the Law, and that salvation comes from keeping it. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

1. The place of the Law. "The Law entered that sin might abound." The Law came that sin might be made exceeding sinful. The Law is not a vehicle of salvation, but a revealer of condemnation. The Law was given that man might know himself a sinner. "Yea, I had not known Sin but by the Law."

2. The penalty of the Law. The Law was given mid the thunderings of Sinai. Every law has its judgments. The pronouncement of the Law is: "The wages of sin is death." He who is under the Law is under the curse.

3. The pitilessness of the Law. The Law knows no mercy, bears no love. The Law shows no pity. The Law says, "Thou shalt," or "Thou shalt not," Whenever the Law is broken, inexorable justice falls.

4. The provision of Grace. Turn for a moment, from the consideration of the Law, to the provision of Grace. This will carry us at once to Calvary, where a message of salvation and not of condemnation may be given. At the Cross we are redeemed from the curse of the Law. He who fulfilled the Law, became a curse for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Take the commandments, one at a time, emphasizing the fact that, in each case where the Law is broken, the penalty of death ensues. "He that despised Moses' Law died without mercy"–this will be the keynote. The objective is to show the terror of sin, that all may be driven to the Cross of Christ where they may find mercy.
