1412. The Scriptures Bear Witness of Him
The Scriptures Bear Witness of Him
"Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me" (Joh_5:39).
It was when Jesus Christ was going to Emmaus, that He opened up the Scriptures concerning Himself. He brought forth what was written concerning Himself, in the Pentateuch, in the Psalms, and, in all of the Prophets. The fact is, that the Word of God everywhere speaks of the Lord Jesus, establishing beyond the possibility of a doubt every claim that Jesus Christ ever made. When men accept the inspiration of the Word of God, it is impossible for them to reject the claims of the Lord Jesus.
If Jesus Christ is not the Son of God, the Bible is not the Word of God. If all of the passages of Scripture which speak of the Lord Jesus Christ, either in His eternity, His Deity, His earth life and death, His resurrection and ascension, or His coming again, are denied, it would be necessary to relegate the whole Bible to the scrap pile; there would not be enough Scripture left to interest any one.
Micah then must tell in vain, "Thou, Bethlehem Ephratah though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall He come forth unto Me, that is to be Ruler in Israel; WHOSE GOINGS FORTH HAVE BEEN FROM OF OLD, FROM EVERLASTING" (Mar_5:2). The Bible calls these words: "The Word of God, which came unto Micah" (Mic_1:1). Those who deny these words deny the Word of God.
Isaiah then must tell in vain how the Lord shall "give you a sign; behold a virgin shall conceive, and shall bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel." The Bible says concerning Isaiah's words: "Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: FOR THE Lord HATH SPOKEN" (Isa_1:1-2), but these men who make Jesus Joseph's son deny the Word of God.
But, let men refuse such parts of the Book as they do not fancy; the Bible is still the very Word of God. It is true in all its parts, or true in none. It does not merely contain the Word of God, it is the Word of God.
When men believe the Bible as the Word of God, they will soon believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. If they accept what the Bible says about their sins, they will certainly accept what it says about their Saviour.
