1423. Blindness–Sin's Darkness
Blindness–Sin's Darkness
"And as He passed by, he saw a man who was blind from birth. He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing" (Joh_9:1, Joh_9:7).
Sin brings darkness, Christ brings light.
1. Having eyes, they see not. On one occasion the disciples reasoned among themselves saying: "It is because we have no bread."
The Lord Jesus said unto them: "Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? * * And He said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?" (Mar_8:16-21).
One of the saddest effects of sin is the blinding of the spiritual understanding.
The Pharisees were acknowledged religionists, they were instructors but of the Law, guides to the blind, a light of them that were in darkness and yet they themselves were blind.
We read in 2Co_4:4, that, "The god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine forth."
We read in 1Co_2:14 that, "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."
We read in Eph_4:18 of the Gentiles who walk in the vanity of their minds, "having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart."
The unregenerate, in the darkness of their minds, will believe a lie.
Saints, too, must beware lest satan blinds them to the things of God.
To two of His own disciples, Christ said, "O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the Prophets have spoken" (Luk_24:25).
2. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened. Thank God, it is not necessary for sinners or for saints to remain in darkness.
We read in the Old Testament, "The Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light" (Isa_60:19).
We read in the New Testament, "The true light was He Who, coming into the world, enlighteneth every man" (Joh_1:9, \1911 Bible).
The Lord Jesus Christ said to the disciples: "All things must be fulfilled, which were written in the Law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning Me. Then opened He their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures" (Luk_24:44-45).
Blessed be God, the blind man received his sight, and those who are blind spiritually, He is able to enlighten.
