The Signs and the Two Comings

"And then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in Heaven" (Mat_24:30).

1. The First Coming was heralded by a moving star. We are always interested in reading the story of the wise men of the East. They journeyed to Jerusalem, seeking the Babe, the Son of God. When they had found Herod they said; "Where is He that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen His star in the East, and are come to worship Him" (Mat_2:2).

Thus, in the First Coming, the Heavenly bodies seemed to do obeisance to the birth of the Christ; the star heralded His appearance.

2. The Second Coming of Christ will be heralded by stars, and by sun and moon. If, in the First Coming, a single star marked out the way for the wise men, we need not be surprised, that, in the Second Coming, an augmented manifestation of the Heavenly bodies shall be seen.

"Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: and then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in Heaven" (Mat_24:29-30).

The Second Advent of our Lord will be marked by marvelous manifestations in the planets that whirl in the heavens above us. These manifestations will cause the hearts of men to fail them as they anticipate the coming of fiery indignation and judgments which will consume the adversary.
