The Shedding of Tears and the Two Comings

"And when He was come near, He beheld the city, and wept over it" (Luk_19:41).

1. In the First Coming, Christ's heart was broken over the perfidy of His people. Like Jeremiah of old, He could hear the alarm of war. He knew the devastations that would befall the beloved city. He could say, "For these things I weep; Mine eye, Mine eye runneth down with water."

The Lord Jesus saw the Israel that rejected Him, sitting solitary; He saw her that was great among the nations and a princess among the provinces, becoming tributary; He saw her enemies dealing treacherously with her; He saw her led into captivity, and dwelling among the nations without rest; He saw her adversaries made her chief; He saw her enemies prosper.

Christ loved Jerusalem, the city of peace, therefore He wept over her desolations.

As David passed over the brook Kidron, he wept as he went; so, the Lord Jesus Christ went over the brook Kidron, weeping.

2. In the Second Coming, Israel's heart will be broken because of her own perfidy. "I will pour upon the House of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem" (Zec_12:10-11).

Joseph was once cast into the pit, and afterward sold to the Ishmaelites. In that day Joseph's tears were unavailing. There came, however, a day when Joseph made himself known unto his brethren. Then, they wept upon his neck and kissed him, and heralded him as their saviour.

So the Lord Jesus Christ whom they once despised, shall be received when He comes the second time.
