1533. The Temple and the Two Comings
The Temple and the Two Comings
"And He shall build the Temple of the Lord: even He shall build the Temple of the Lord; and He shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon His throne" (Zec_6:12-13).
1. Following the First Coming of Christ, the Temple was thrown down. The Lord said unto the disciples: "See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down" (Mat_24:2).
The history of the fall of Jerusalem under Titus is known to all. Josephus portrays the scene with words that make the flesh to creep. There was a time of suffering and of sorrow, of bitterness and of biting distress; that climaxed all the woes of Israel: her city was taken; her people were scattered; her walls were thrown down; and her Temple was destroyed.
2. In the Second Coming of Christ, the Temple will be restored. The Man whose name is the Branch, shall come forth with healing in His wings. He will build Jerusalem and restore her walls. "Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. The Lord also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the House of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah" (Zec_12:6-7).
In that day shall the Temple be rebuilt in a glory that shall exceed even the glory of the days of Solomon.
The Holy Spirit in the Book of Ezekiel, chapters 40-43, describes the building of the new Temple. Ezekiel also tells us that the glory of God which left the Temple in the days of yore, shall again return and the glory of the Lord will fill the House. Then the Son shall say, "Son of man, the place of My throne, and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever, and My holy name, shall the House of Israel no more defile, neither they, nor their kings."
