Abraham and Isaac

"That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies: and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed My voice" (Gen_22:17-18).

The whole story of Abraham's offering up Isaac upon Mount Moriah is highly typical.

1. The three-day journey of Gen_22:4.

This is typical of Christ's three days in the heart of the earth.

2. The wood of the burnt-offering laid upon Isaac the son of Abraham, while Abraham bore the fire in his hand and a knife, as they went both of them together (see Gen_22:6).

This scene describes Christ bearing His Cross, and being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God.

3. Isaac bound and laid upon the altar, while Abraham stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son (see Gen_22:9-10).

This is a picture of Isaiah's prophecy: "When Thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin."

4. The ram caught in a thicket by his horns and offered up, in the stead of Isaac (see Gen_22:13).

Here we have the story of the substitutionary work of Christ. Jesus Christ died in the sinner's stead, the just for the unjust.

5. The name of the place, Jehovah-jireh (see Gen_22:14).

This presents the type of God's provision of salvation through the sacrifice of His Son.

6. The vision of the Lord's Return and the millennial blessing that shall be His. This is set forth in Gen_22:15-18.

The angel of the Lord calls unto Abraham out of Heaven the second time, and promises unto Abraham a twofold blessing.

(1) His seed was to be as the stars of the heaven.

(2) His seed was to be as the sand which was on the sea-shore.

In these words there is seen a prophecy of the two lines of seed, the earthly and the Heavenly, which shall reign with Christ, during the thousand years.

The conclusion of the type is strictly alined with the Second Coming, because it is only after the Lord's Return that all the nations of the earth will be blessed, and that righteousness and peace will reign among men.
