1564. Rebekah and Isaac

Rebekah and Isaac

"And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming. And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel" (Gen_24:63-65).

There is no story in the Word of God more beautiful than the story of Isaac and Rebekah.

1. Abraham Seeking a Wife for His Son

Abraham was old and well stricken in age.

"And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, * * Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: and I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites" (Gen_24:2-3).

After this, Abraham gives command to his servant to go to Nahor to secure a wife for Isaac.

The Holy Ghost to-day is taking out a people for Christ's name, a people who shall be the Bride of the Lamb.

2. Rebekah Is Approached

"And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, * * and the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin" (Gen_24:15-16).

When the Holy Spirit found us, even though we were sinners, polluted in our sins, yet we were very fair unto Him, because He loved us, and He knew what we would be when touched by grace.

3. Rebekah Consents to Go

"And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go" (Gen_24:58).

We have left out much that is interesting, the plea of Abraham's servant, his gifts of jewels, of silver, of gold and of raiment. We wish to emphasize merely the fact that when Rebekah was called upon to leave her home, she promptly told her mother and her brother, "I will go."

This sets forth the happy day when we yielded our hearts and lives unto God, receiving the Lord Jesus as our Saviour. It was then that we gave our consent, and said, "I will go."

4. Rebekah's Journey

"And Rebekah arose and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah and went his way" (Gen_24:61).

This journey across the desert sands, typifies our journeying along the pathway of life, in company with the Spirit of God, who is our paraclete, traveling at our side.

5. The Happy Meeting

"And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi; * * and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, * * and Rebekah lifted up her eyes" (Gen_24:62-64).

It was a happy hour when Isaac and Rebekah saw one another. They met at Lahai-roi, the well of meeting.

One of these days, our Lord Jesus will come forth by the way. The saints will be caught up and at "Lahai-roi" they will meet. The Lord will look upon the up-coming saints, and He will descend to meet them with a shout; His heart will be filled with gladness. The saints will turn their faces upward and will see their descending Lord and the heavens will reverberate with praise.

6. The Marriage

"And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her" (Gen_24:67).

The marriage of the Lamb is the glorious destiny of saints. Blessed are they who are the called to the marriage supper of the Lamb. These are the true sayings of God.
