1583. One in Inherent Life
One in Inherent Life
"For with Thee is the fountain of life" (Psa_36:9).
1. God the Father has Inherent Life
"As the Father hath life in himself" (Joh_5:26).
"As the living Father hath sent me" (Joh_6:57).
"Being alienated from the life of God" (Eph_4:18).
By inherent life, we mean an uncreated life, a life within one's self.
This inherent life is true because the eternity of God is true. God the Father is life; He is the fountainhead of all the living. It is in Him, that we live and move and have our being.
2. God the Son has Inherent Life
"So hath He given to the Son to have life in himself" (Joh_5:26).
"In him was life" (Joh_1:4).
"The Word of life" (1Jn_1:1).
The Lord Jesus never hesitated to say, "I am the * * Life." He said: "He that hath the Son hath life." He said: "This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom Thou hast sent."
The Lord plainly taught that we lived as much in the Son, as in the Father. He said that whosoever ate His flesh and drank His Blood had life. He was the Bread of Life.
Jesus Christ was begotten of the Father only in the sense that He became flesh. He was the firstborn, only in the sense of His resurrection from the dead.
Jesus Christ had inherent life just as the Father had inherent life, He was life.
3. God the Holy Spirit has Inherent Life
"The Spirit is life" (Rom_8:10).
"The law of the Spirit of life" (Rom_8:2).
The Holy Spirit is life in the same sense that God the Father and that God the Son is life.
He is creator, but not created. He is living, but never made alive. The Spirit of God is the eternal Spirit, one in life with the Godhead.
None other has inherent life save God–Father, Son and Holy Ghost–thus again, "the Lord our God, is one Lord."
