1608. Three Distinct Persons Are Seen in the Promise of the Spirit
Three Distinct Persons Are Seen in the Promise of the Spirit
"The Father * * shall give you another Comforter.
"He shall testify of Me.
"The Comforter * * even the Spirit of Truth" (Joh_14:16; Joh_15:26; Joh_14:17).
In Christ's marvelous message which He spoke just after the supper, the Father, the Son and the Spirit are more than once set forth as distinct, each from the other.
In the three statements which we have culled from the address, we have the Son promising the disciples that the Father will give another Comforter.
Next, the Son is to be magnified by the Spirit. "For the Spirit," said Christ, "shall testify of Me."
Then, the Spirit, Who is the Comforter, is spoken of as the Spirit of Truth.
No one can possibly fail to see three distinct personalities. Christ did not speak of the Holy Spirit as "another Comforter" if He meant that He was Himself the Comforter.
The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Comforter; the three constitute one God, but they are three distinct persons.
