The word "remnant" means simply "the things which remain." The word is usually and almost exclusively used concerning Israel. We will find out, however, that there have always been remnants in all ages. There have been those left who were true to God.
The word "remnant" immediately suggests certain words which are indissolubly linked to the things that remain.
1. The word "sin." A remnant presupposes that the great bulk of men have sinned, have turned from God, have been overwhelmed with iniquity.
2. The word "judgment." A remnant presupposes that a judgment has fallen upon the ones who sinned, and has left but a comparative few, who were secure from condemnation.
3. The word "grace." A remnant always suggests that in the midst of sin and judgment God has manifested grace and remembered mercy.
4. The word "election." A remnant is not a "happen-so;" it is God's election, being carried out unto a blessed completion, and a pre-conceived plan.
5. The word "promise." A remnant establishes the fact that God has made certain promises to men which He proposes to fulfil through those that remain.
6. The word "protection." A remnant assures the fact that there is a great God who is placing His protecting care around the people of His grace, His promise and His purpose.
