1663. II. In Denying Spirit or Angel, the Sadducees Denied a Personal God
II. In Denying Spirit or Angel, the Sadducees Denied a Personal God
The religion of the Sadducee was pantheistic; his god was no more than the impersonal power that dwelt in the material universe; he was no more than the unfailing law which wrought in nature–a law that was neither personal, nor intelligent.
Thus Sadduceeism, in denying spirit, would rule God out of His universe.
All men will agree that the world revolves on its axis, and that, as it revolves, it slowly takes its orbit around the sun.
All of this is accomplished to a mathematical exactness, and according to unerring law. However, it is utmost folly to assert that law governs the movements of the earth.
Who would argue that the schedule runs the train? that the curriculum runs the school? or, that a system runs the army?
The very fact that the army runs by system, the school by a systematized curriculum, and the train by a set schedule, assures us that back of all these, there are army officers, school faculties, and train dispatchers.
The very fact that the world revolves on its axis, and that it marches in its circumscribed orbit around the sun, according to an unvarying law, necessitates back of the law, an intelligent and master hand.
He who would seek to eliminate God from His universe, is a fool.
In spite of Sadduceeism, "Our God is in the Heavens: He hath done whatsoever He hath pleased" (Psa_115:3).
Our God is the Living God: "Who made Heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein" (Act_14:15, \1911 Bible).
Our God hath given us: "Rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness" (Act_14:17).
Our God is a God who, in the beginning, "Created heaven and earth" (Gen_1:1). All things were made by Him, and for Him, and in Him all things are held together.
