We now come to our second message on the Leaven of the Pharisees. We need not be surprised that the strongest anathemas in the Word of God are pronounced against Phariseeism, which is hypocrisy.
If there was one thing that stood forth in the life of Christ, it was His demand for sincerity.
Phariseeism stood for everything insincere–it made great boasts by way of profession, but it had nothing to its account by way of possession.
The Pharisee was a man who wore his religion on the outside. He could put it on and off with the same ease that the clergyman can put on and off his Sunday coat. He had a form of godliness, but he knew nothing of the power thereof. He could fashion words, and form creeds, but he had no conception of the heart life that makes a creed potent. He said, but he did not; or, he prayed but he practiced not.
The Pharisee knew nothing whatsoever of the passion of the Lord Jesus Christ toward lost and dying men.
As we study their methods, may we learn to shun them.
