1726. The Bible Story About Sin
The Bible Story About Sin
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Rom_3:23).
Once more we travel briefly along ground common to all. We have three statements to make, all of which are generally accepted. In truth, even the skeptic cannot refuse the plain statements of Scripture about sin; for they are apparent to the most casual observer.
1. The fact that sin is. "For all have sinned," is the message of Rom_3:23. This is also the message of daily life. There is not a son of Adam who will not grant the fact of his own sinful heart. The fruitage of sin is everywhere. The man who denies it is a theorist, refusing to grant what he knows to be true.
2. The fact that sin separates from God. "I heard thy voice;" "I was afraid;" "I was naked;" "I hid myself"–These are the words of Adam, as he spoke of the effect that his sin had upon him. The words are recorded in Genesis 3.
Sin always separates from God. God is a holy God and cannot fellowship the unholy. Man, in his inward self, knows this–and he seeks therefore to hide his sin, to excuse it, or to belittle it.
3. The fact that sin merits condemnation from God. "The wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men." This is the positive word found in Romans 1.
God is a just God and cannot forgive the guilty. Sin must be punished. This is the Word of God, and also the accepted belief of men. Our jails tell forth the story that mankind believes in punishment–a punishment meted out according to the depth of the sin committed.
