1739. What the Prophets Claimed for Their Writings
What the Prophets Claimed for Their Writings
"To whom the word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign" (Jer_1:2).
The Prophets all claimed the inspiration of God.
Hear the words of Jeremiah; "Then the Lord put forth His hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put My words in thy mouth" (Jer_1:9).
Hear the words of Isaiah; "The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz * * Hear, O Heavens, and give ear, O earth; * * for the Lord hath spoken" (Isa_1:1-2). Isaiah claimed inspiration at least twenty times, when he calls his words, the "Word of the Lord."
Hear the words of Ezekiel, "Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee." "Son of man, all My words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears, * * speak unto them,–and tell them, Thus saith the Lord God" (Eze_2:1; Eze_3:10-11).
We could quote more than fifty statements from Ezekiel where we read the expression "The word of God," or "The word of the Lord."
It is unnecessary for us to go through all the Prophets in this same way. What is true of one Prophet, is true of them all. Let us merely summarize their claims:
Dan_10:9 : "I heard the voice of his words."
Hos_1:1 : "The word of the Lord that came unto Hosea."
Joe_1:1 : "The word of the Lord that came to Joel."
Amo_3:1 : "Hear this word that the Lord hath spoken."
Oba_1:1 : "Thus saith the Lord God."
Jon_1:1 : "The word of the Lord came unto Jonah."
Mic_1:1 : "The word of the Lord that came to Micah."
Nah_1:12 : "Thus saith the Lord."
Hab_2:2 : "And the Lord answered me, and said."
Zep_1:1 : "The word of the Lord which came unto Zephaniah."
Hag_1:1 : "The word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet."
Zec_1:1 : "The word of the Lord unto Zechariah."
Mal_1:1 : "The burden of the word of the Lord."
Men may criticise the Word of God if they wish, but we believe it brings a message from Heaven; we believe that, from every viewpoint, it is trustworthy and dependable.
