269. JOB 19:25. JOB’S FAITH IN THE REDEEMER

269. JOB 19:25. JOB’S FAITH IN THE REDEEMER

Job_19:25. Job’s Faith in the Redeemer

"For I know that my Redeemer liveth."’97Job_19:25.

Refer to the history of Job. His adversity, afflictions, &c. The suspicions of his friends. His affecting appeal, ver. 21, 22. His confidence in his Redeemer "For I know," &c.

Let us notice,

I. The Character of Job’s Redeemer.

There is only one Redeemer of guilty men, and that is Jesus, the Son of God, the only Saviour ever revealed to our world; in whom the pious and believing have trusted in every age.

Let us notice,

1. His Person.

And it must be observed that he is represented,

(1) As a Divine person, possessing the true and proper nature, titles, and perfections of the Godhead. Immanuel, God with us. Then,

(2) He is represented as being possessed of perfect humanity. Man with man. Born of a woman. In all things made like unto us, except being sinless. Thus he became the kinsman of every child of man.

(3) He was therefore both Divine and human. God incarnate. God manifested in the flesh. God enshrined in our humanity. Truly God, yet really man. The great and glorious God, yet weak, suffering, and dying man. Such is the scriptural account of his person.

Then notice,

2. His work.

How did he redeem us?

(1) From natural depravity, by the purity of his nature.

(2) From the demands of the law, by his perfect obedience to all its commands.

(3) From the infliction of the curse, by his death upon the cross. "Being made a curse for us." "Dying for us."

(4) From the power of Satan and death, by his resurrection from the dead. Yea, he hath "abolished death," &c., &c.

(5) He redeems from the power of sin, and into the image of God, by the influence of the Spirit which he sends down into the hearts of his people.

(6) He redeems into heaven by entering it for us with his precious blood, and by receiving the souls of his people to his right hand and glory. Joh_14:1-4.

(7) Finally, he will redeem, by his almighty power, all the bodies of his saints, from corruption and the grave, at the last day.

Having noticed the character of Job’s Redeemer, observe,

II. Job’s Profession of him.

"I know that my Redeemer liveth."

In this profession there is,

1. Appropriation.

"My Redeemer." Angels cannot say this. Devils cannot say this. Those in unbelief cannot say this. But the humble devout believer both realizes and says this. "My Lord and my God." "He loved me," &c. My refuge, deliverer, help, &c.

There is,

2. Assurance.

"I know." In religion there is consciousness and certainty. "I know in whom," &c. "We know that we are of God." We know that the "beloved is ours, and we are his." He is ours because we are sinners, and he was given to save sinners. He is ours because we believe in him, and he is the "Saviour especially of them that believe." We know because we love him, and his love is shed abroad in our hearts. We know his Spin dwells within us, and "bears witness," &c.

Then there is,

3. Confidence.

Confidence in Christ’s unchanging existence. "He liveth." He ever lived, before time was, or any creatures were "from everlasting," &c. He lived and appeared to our first parents: to Abraham to Moses, to Isaiah. He lives now, en throned on high, as the King of Zion, and as the great High Priest of our profession. And he will live forever. Jesus Christ, the same, &c. He inhabiteth eternity, &c. "Thy throne, O God, forever and ever." Heb_1:8. If he did not live, he could not hear, or bless, or save. But he liveth, therefore his promises shall be fulfilled, his cause maintained, his church glorified, and all his saints shall live with him forever and ever.

Application

1. This subject should be the support and joy of the Christian in temptations, afflictions, and death.

2. It will be the song of the redeemed forever.

3. Urge all to come and experience the saving power of this living Redeemer
