31 ENJOY THE JOURNEY
“As soon as the baby is born, we will.…”
“As soon as junior is out of diapers, we will.…”
“When he moves out, we will.…”
“After we pay off the debt, we must.…”
“When we retire, we will.…”
Some couples keep wishing their lives away. They can’t enjoy the journey. They are always looking ahead to the next passage as the time they will take a vacation, enjoy one another, or do something special together.
We want to have goals but not at the expense of missing the moment. We need destinations in life but not at the risk of missing the journey. Couples who can’t enjoy the journey always find themselves sacrificing relationships for goals and intimacy for quick fixes. Enjoying the journey is like a gallery of portraits that one can enjoy and ponder. Missing the journey is like trying to watch a movie on fast forward and really enjoying it. It’s impossible.
Try this: Stop speeding through life like you’re driving down an interstate. Take an alternate route. Pull off along the shoulder and take a walk among the wildflowers. Enjoy the daily walk of marriage. Remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
