45 DIVORCE BREAKS BOTH THE HEARTS OF GOD
AND CHILDREN.

“I can’t understand why my child is so upset with me all of the time,” complained a divorced father.

I wish I had taped all the conversations I have had through the years with the children of divorced parents. Before any parents ever contemplated a divorce, I would have them listen to the hurt and pain in the lives of the victims of divorce—children.

God hates divorce. We work closely with a godly, restored couple, both of whom have been divorced and are in their second marriage. God has forgiven and restored both of them and their ex-spouses, but the scars of divorce forever carry the pain and consequences of brokenness. They can relate from personal experience the pain of divorce to other couples

Most alienated husbands and wives can work through their problems if both repent, both forgive, both learn new ways of relating, and both are willing to change. Marriage is a covenant among three person—husband, wife, and God. A threefold cord is not easily broken.

For a brief time in our marriage, my wife and I allowed ourselves both to speak and think the divorce word. We were even counseled by some to get a divorce. But God’s covenant was more important than our selfish desires. We wanted to be happy. We discovered that true joy came when we began to want each other’s happiness above our own.

Make a vow today. Vow never to use the “d” (divorce) word in your marriage. Decide that you will do whatever it takes to work through your problems with the help of the Lord and others.

And this is the second thing you do: You cover the altar of the Lord with tears, With weeping and crying; so He does not regard the offering anymore, nor receive it with goodwill from your hands. Yet you say, “For what reason?” Because the Lord has been witness Between you and the wife of your youth, with whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion and your wife by covenant. But did He not make them one, having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? he seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth (Mal. 2:13–15). Action Steps I/We Need to Take
