62 GIVE YOUR SPOUSE UNDIVIDED ATTENTION

One of the most common complaints I hear from wives in particular is that their husbands seem to be “somewhere else” when they are talking to them. Imagine that—a husband whose mind is drifting as his wife talks! It happens frequently.

Now it is true that, when it comes to talking to their mate on a daily basis, most wives have thousands more words to say than do their husbands. Nonetheless, one of the greatest gifts we can give each other when we’re together is our undivided attention, even if we are tired of hearing the other person.

Giving your spouse your undivided attention communicates acceptance, love, caring and affirmation to her. Likewise not giving your undivided attention communicates apathy, indifference and lack of affection.

Try this: Here are some failsafe ways to insure each other’s undivided attention.

Turn off the TV, CD player or computer.

Shut off the phone, beeper or cell phone.

Withdraw for the moment from children.

Get alone together in a private place.

Sit or stand face-to-face.

Make eye contact.

Focus your thoughts on the other person, not on something else.

I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.
