ONCE, when I was traveling, I stopped in at an American Airlines Admiral’s Club to wait for a flight. It was one of the bigger clubs where they have hostesses come around and ask patrons if they would like something to drink. So the hostess came around and said “Sir, may I get you something to drink?”

I said, “Yes. I want something to drink.”

The hostess brought me a ginger ale. She also brought me a dish full of snacks. No, I did not order a dish full of snacks. I did not request snacks. I did not intend to pay for snacks. But this dish of snacks was free. It was part of a planned evil.

She brought me this dish of snacks because it is full of salt. The goal of her bringing me the salty snacks was to get me to order another ginger ale. The goal of the salt was to create thirst, so I’d keep ordering and keep spending money.

We are the salt of the earth. The idea is that our presence in the world will create spiritual thirst so that we can offer people the living water—Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God.1052
