(April 23, 1818–October 20, 1894), was an English historian. He was a professor at Oxford and published the History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada, in twelve volumes. James Anthony Froude professed:

The Bible, thoroughly known, is literature in itself—the rarest and richest in all departments of thoughts and imagination which exists.2509
