LISTER,
JOSEPH, 1ST BARON

(April 5, 1827–February 10, 1912), was an English surgeon who pioneered “antiseptic surgery,” by the application of chemical disinfectants. In 1865, he introduced the use of carbolic acid. He was the founder of the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in London. He also served as the President of the British Association and the Royal Society. Lord Lister, who was of Quaker background, stated:

I am a believer in the fundamental doctrines of Christianity.2651
