0349. THE PRECIOUS NAME.

0349. THE PRECIOUS NAME.

THE PRECIOUS NAME.

"Thy Name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee" (Son_1:3).

1. Its character. "It is as ointment." This teaches us that it is-

1. Precious. His Name, like precious ointment, is a compound of great value. There are five marvellous ingredients in it. His Name shall be called: (1) Wonderful; (2) Counsellor; (3) The Mighty God; (4) The Everlasting Father; (5) The Prince of Peace (Isa_9:6). What a Name!

2. Fragrant. All who come into gracious contact with Jesus Christ will be so perfumed with His Spirit that others will take knowledge of them that they have been with Jesus (Act_4:13).

2. Its mission. "As ointment poured forth." This is most expressive. His Name, which is His character and life, poured forth. Then it is-

1. Revealed. There has been no keeping back, the precious treasure of His life’s Blood has been poured out as a sacrifice for us (Eph_5:2). He poured out His soul unto death. In this was manifested the love of God.

2. Offered. The pouring out is the offering of all that that Name and life means to every one who feels their need of the Divine odour instead of their own. Those who receive Jesus as the Son of God may have the whole house of their heart and life filled with the odour of this ointment.

3. It’s influence. "Therefore do the virgins love Thee." It-

1. Saves. "They shall call His Name Jesus, because He shall save" (Mat_1:21). This is an eye-opening salve (Rev_3:18) and a sin-cleansing ointment. "If ye ask anything in My Name I will do it." There is none other Name under Heaven, none other ointment for the sore of sin (Act_4:12).

2. Constrains. "Therefore do they love Thee." Those made virgins by the pouring forth of His Name cannot but love Him. The love of Christ constrains them. They love so much that they give themselves to Him and delight to follow Him (Rom_12:1-2). Lovest thou Me?
