The text,

I. Exhibits to us a distinguished Person.

"Christ Jesus."

1. Christ, or the Anointed.

Jesus was not only the gift of God, but he was God’s holy and Anointed One; anointed by the full and copious outpouring of the Spirit, which descended upon him without measure. Anointed as our Prophet, Priest, and King; Deu_18:15; Heb_3:1; 1Ti_6:15; Luk_4:18. He is also,

2. Jesus, that is, Saviour And he was anointed Christ, that he might be the Saviour of the world. As Saviour, he possesses infinite dignity, almighty power, unbounded compassion, and exhaustless merit.

The subject,

II. Refers to an invaluable Blessing.

"Salvation."

Salvation implies guilt, and misery, and danger; and supposes deliverance from them. Now, gospel salvation is,

1. Complete.

It obliterates guilt, extinguishes misery, and delivers from danger. It has, also, a positive, as well as a negative influence. It justifies, gives peace, regenerates, sanctifies, and exalts to eternal life. It includes both body and soul.

2. It is present.

Not a future boon. Its beginning is here. Its deliverances and enjoyments are now to be possessed. "Behold, now is the accepted time," &c. "By grace are ye saved," &c. "But now are ye light," &c. "But now in Christ Jesus are made nigh."

3. It is eternal.

A salvation commensurate with the soul’s duration. "I give unto my sheep eternal life," &c. "Eternal glory;" 2Ti_2:1. "Eternal redemption;" Heb_9:12. "Eternal inheritance;" Heb_9:15.

The text,

III. Specifies the peculiar Source of the Blessing.

"Which is in Christ Jesus."

1. Salvation is in his person.

He is emphatically the salvation of the sinner. "Behold, God is my salvation;" Isa_12:2; Isa_49:6. When Simeon took him up in his arms, he said, "Mike eyes have seen thy salvation;" Luk_2:30.

2. Salvation is in his blood.

"A propitiation through faith in his blood;" Rom_3:25. "Redemption through his blood;" Eph_1:7; Col_1:14 "Redeemed with the precious blood of Christ;" 1Pe_1:19.

3. Salvation is in his name.

"There is none other name," &c.; Act_4:12. Remission of sins preached in his name; Luk_24:47. We become the sons of God by "believing in his name;" Joh_1:12. "Life through his name;" Joh_20:31.

4. Salvation is in Christ’s word or gospel.

"To you is the word of this salvation sent;" Act_13:26 "Gospel of your salvation;" Eph_1:13.

5. Salvation is Christ’s gift.

"I give eternal life;" Joh_10:38. Christ shall bestow the crown of righteousness, &c.; crown of life; crown of glory, &c.; 2Ti_4:8; 1Pe_5:4; Rev_2:10. See, also, Joh_17:2; Joh_6:8.

6. Salvation will chiefly consist in the enjoyment of Christ.

His favor’97his image’97his presence’97his kingdom.

Application

Our subject should lead the sinner to be solicitous about what is his chief good, salvation, and to seek for it in Christ, where alone it is to be found. Salvation is not in ourselves; it is not in man, nor in a profession, nor in ordinances, nor duties; but it is in Christ Jesus; and it is in him for all who believe in his name.
