0113. The Call of Abram
The Call of Abram
"Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, * * unto a land that I will shew thee * * and thou shalt be a blessing * * in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed" (Gen_12:1-3).
This passage shows that God called Abram because God wanted to make him a world-wide blessing.
Abram was not blessed that he might hoard his blessings:
"Have you had a kindness shown, pass it on;
‘Twas not given to thee alone, pass it on.
Let it travel down the years,
Let it wipe another’s tears,
Till in Heaven the deed appears,
Pass it on."
"Saved to serve," is a true motto. God chose Abram, and called Israel that He might have a channel through which He could make His Name known among the nations.
"Take and give" is another true saying. The lake that takes and keeps, becomes a salt lake. There must be an outlet to keep the waters fresh. The life that gets and does not give, is sure to become a stagnant pool.
The extent of God’s call to Abram encompassed the whole world, "all the families of the earth". We need to be enlarged according to God’s rule, abundantly, to preach the Gospel in the regions beyond us. We should not fail to include in our service and prayer the whole world. "Every creature" should be our aim.
When we think of the fact that millions of people on earth today have never heard of Christ and of the Cross, how we should bestir ourselves!
