0153. Woe! Or the Cry of the Unbeliever
Woe! Or the Cry of the Unbeliever
"And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment" (Joh_16:8).
We need to pray for the old time conviction of sin among the lost, as well as among the saved.
We read in the days of Finney, how the congregation in the intensity of their emotion, and in the depth of their conviction, caught hold of the pews, and cried aloud for mercy.
On Pentecost, following the message of Peter, the people cried aloud, saying: "Men and brethren, what shall we do"? Oh! that we might once more see the mighty power of the Holy Spirit as He convicts the world of sin.
The unsaved world is rushing so rapidly down the river of pleasures, that they have no time to think; they are lost in the rapids of careless living.
The unsaved are so engrossed with the cares of the world; they are so engulfed in the pursuit of business; that they too have no time for God.
We are reminded of a little song our mother sang to us in our boyhood:–
"I’d like to die, said Willie,
If my papa could die too,
But he says he isn’t ready,
‘Cause he has so much to do.
"And I’ll have to tell the angels
When I meet them at the door,
That they’ll have to ‘cuse my papa,
‘Cause he couldn’t leave the store."
What the last worldlian needs today, is a new vision of the Lord, high and lifted up; then, and not until then, will he cry: "Woe is me! for I am undone".
The Holy Spirit is convicting the world of sin, because Christ has gone to the Father and is glorified.
"Fairest flowers soon decay,
Youth and beauty pass away;
Oh, you have not long to stay:
Be in time!
"While God’s Spirit bids you come,
Sinner, do not longer roam,
Lest you seal your hopeless doom:
Be in time!
"Time is gliding swiftly by,
Death and judgment draweth nigh,
To the arms of Jesus fly:
Be in time!"
