Rebekah’s Home Life

"Rebekah came out * * with her pitcher upon her shoulder" (Gen_24:15).

We grant it. Times have changed, Oriental customs have given way to other ideals; but, withal, we insist that time has never made the picture of Rebekah, with her pitcher upon her shoulder, an unseemly thing.

1. It is honorable for a girl to be busy about the home; it is honorable for a girl to do honest work.

The young woman who has the idea that she is no more than an ornament for the gaze of some senseless youth, has missed the real objective of life. Rebekah lost nothing by giving drink to the camels of Eliezer. She stood forth before him as a queenly woman, with a ready hand to help, and willing mind to serve.

There is nothing that so exhausts the body, and so weakens the brain as careless and listless lounging. The girl needs to watch her leisure hours. She must even guard her moments of recreation. Healthful exercise is good, but may God save the daughters of our land from the theaters, the card table, and the dance. The novel and the average love story should come also under the ban of the girl who will stand forth as being God’s chosen one.

The girl who is busy about the home and with her preparation for a real life mission, will not have time nor desire to fritter away her days in foolish and harmful gaities.

The girl who takes the opposite position and neglects all home cares and fruitful service and begins to ply her trade of street walking and pleasure seeking, will soon be calling home too dull, and the daily task too irksome.
