0177. Abraham's Desire
Abraham’s Desire
"Take a wife unto my son" (Gen_24:4).
Abraham sought a wife for Isaac. This is just what God the Father is now doing for Christ Jesus.
This purpose of God is first revealed in the 2d chapter of Genesis. God put a deep sleep upon Adam, and then He took from his side a rib, and closed up the flesh instead thereof. Then, with "the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made He a woman and brought her unto the man."
In like manner is God now taking from the side of Christ a Bride, and that Bride shall yet be presented unto Him, without spot or wrinkle, or any such thing.
The 45th Psalm presents the picture of Christ, returning from the marriage. He comes forth from the "ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad." He comes with all of His garments smelling of "myrrh, and aloes and cassia." He comes with His Queen, standing at His right hand, "clad in the gold of Ophir."
The 25th of Matthew presents the picture of Christ coming as a Bridegroom, and "they that are ready," go in with Him to the marriage.
The 19th of Revelation announces that the marriage of the Lamb has come and "His Wife hath made herself ready." To the Wife it is granted that "she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints."
Solomon’s Song presents to us a picture of Christ and His Bride. His love for her and her love for Him is beautifully described.
Thus, the purpose of God in getting a Bride for Christ is set forth in many Scriptures.
Husbands are told to love their wives even as Christ loved the Church. Thus even as a man leaves his father and mother, and is joined to his wife, and they become one flesh, so also are we "members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones." "This is a great mystery, but I speak of Christ and the Church."
