The Gracious Response

"Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the Lord hath spoken.

"And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go" (Gen_24:51, Gen_24:58).

The final decision must come to each individual. The Holy Spirit comes and presents His plea. He tells you of the wonderful glories of Christ. He presents an invitation to the marriage. But the Holy Spirit never forces the issue. Each one must make the final choice.

Rebekah did not hesitate. She said immediately: "I will go." Why do any hesitate? why delay? why refuse? Yet it is so that thousands today are turning down the call of the Spirit.

When the invitation went out for the marriage of the king’s son, when those who were bidden were told: "Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready; come to the marriage;" then those who were invited "made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: and the remnant took his servants and entreated them spitefully, and slew them."

Not so with Rebekah. She quickly and quietly said: "I will go." She did not plead for delay; she did not procrastinate.

No wonder Eliezer rejoiced and "worshipped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth." Then he brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah."

In connection with Rebekah’s own prompt decision and response, there was a very happy occurrence. Both her mother and her brother exclaimed "Take her, and go, and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the Lord hath spoken." It is not always so. Oftentimes the very members of the family are the ones who hinder the wooings of the Spirit, and the very ones who stand in the way of some loved one’s acceptance of the Gospel.
